Mamelodi Sundowns are reportedly working towards extending Mothobi Mvala’s contract, demonstrating their continued faith in the experienced defender despite his recent injury struggles.
The towering centre-back has been with the Brazilians since 2020 and has established himself as an important figure within the squad. Over the years, Mvala has contributed to the club’s defensive strength, forming a solid partnership with Grant Kekana while bringing experience and leadership to the backline.
However, the 2026 campaign has been particularly challenging for the defender. Mvala has struggled with injuries and has made only two appearances this season after undergoing knee surgery. His absence has also affected his international ambitions, as he missed both the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals and the FIFA World Cup.
Despite these setbacks, Sundowns reportedly believe the defender still has significant value to offer the club. His leadership qualities, experience and influence in the dressing room are understood to be important factors behind the club’s willingness to extend his stay beyond his current contract, which expires in June.
Head coach Miguel Cardoso has provided an update on Mvala’s recovery, explaining that the defender has returned to training but still needs time to regain his previous level.
"Mothobi is training with the team, but not for a long time. Considering the long-term injury he had, there's not only his return to training but his return to performance," Cardoso explained.
The coach’s comments highlight the importance of managing Mvala’s recovery carefully rather than rushing him back into competitive action.
Since joining Sundowns, the defender has recorded 119 appearances, scoring seven goals and providing four assists across competitions.
While his recent injury problems have limited his contribution on the pitch, his experience remains valuable to the Pretoria-based giants.
If the proposed contract extension is completed, Mvala will have another opportunity to rebuild his fitness and continue contributing to Sundowns’ ambitions.
For the experienced defender, the next chapter will be about overcoming adversity, returning to peak performance and proving that his journey with the Brazilians is far from over.
