Orlando Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has told his players they must accept the pressure of being favourites this season. Speaking after the Buccaneers’ successful campaign last year, the Moroccan coach said the team cannot rest on what they achieved.
“We didn’t lose last season. But what we achieved last season is in the past. Well done to the boys and the club. But we have to move on. It’s another season, other targets, and we have to plan for that,” Ouaddou said in an interview with SuperSport TV.
He explained that the players need the right mindset as defending champions. “We need to have this positive arrogance. We have to accept this position of favourites because we were champions. But at the same time we play against new management.”
Ouaddou was clear that being favourites does not mean the title is already won. “To be favourites, it doesn’t mean that you’re going to win. It’s up to us to come with a lot of energy and to give good football for South Africa.”
Last season Ouaddou guided Pirates to the Betway Premiership title, ending a long wait for the league trophy. The club also lifted other domestic cups under him, finishing a strong campaign that stopped Mamelodi Sundowns from continuing their run of titles. That success has put the Soweto side in the spotlight again as the new season gets underway.
The coach’s words come as Pirates prepare for a full calendar of league games, cup matches and possible continental fixtures. With some new players in the squad, Ouaddou knows the group must stay focused and keep improving. He has often spoken about the need for hard work and a strong attitude, and these latest comments continue that message.
Pirates fans have grown used to the coach’s honest style. He does not hide from the expectations that come with being champions. Instead, he wants his players to use that status as motivation. The aim, he said, is to bring energy every week and play football that people across the country can enjoy.
As the season progresses, all eyes will be on whether the Buccaneers can back up their position as favourites with consistent results. Ouaddou has made it plain that the past is finished and a new challenge has begun.
