"Anything is Possible" - Aden McCarthy Hits Out After Scoring His 1st UEFA Champions League Goal

South African defender Aden McCarthy has delivered an inspiring message after scoring his first UEFA Champions League goal, declaring that “anything is possible” following a memorable moment against German giants Borussia Dortmund.

The former Kaizer Chiefs defender found the back of the net for Azerbaijan champions Sabah FK during their 2-1 defeat to Dortmund at the Baku Olympic Stadium on Tuesday, 20 October 2026.

Despite the disappointing result, the 22-year-old marked a significant milestone in his career by scoring in Europe's premier club competition on his third Champions League appearance.

Dortmund took an early lead through Guinea international Serhou Guirassy, who opened the scoring in the 10th minute after capitalising on a rebound.

Sabah fought back and eventually found their equaliser through McCarthy, who rose brilliantly to head home a free-kick delivered by Tymoteusz Puchacz in the 39th minute.

The goal brought the hosts level at 1-1 and offered Sabah renewed hope of securing another positive result in their European campaign.

However, Dortmund restored their advantage eight minutes into the second half when Guirassy completed his brace in the 53rd minute, securing all three points for the Bundesliga outfit.

McCarthy also impressed defensively, producing an important block to deny Guirassy another scoring opportunity as Sabah attempted to remain in contention.

Although his maiden Champions League goal could not prevent defeat, the achievement represents another important chapter in the young defender's rapid rise from South African football to the European stage.

McCarthy previously represented Kaizer Chiefs before joining Sabah, where he has continued to gain valuable experience against elite opposition.

His progress also highlights the growing opportunities available to South African footballers seeking to establish themselves in European competitions.

The defender's message, “Anything is possible,” captures the significance of his journey and the determination required to compete at the highest level.

For Sabah, the focus will now turn to recovering from the narrow defeat and strengthening their position in the Champions League league phase.

For McCarthy personally, however, scoring against one of Germany's most prominent clubs will remain a special moment as he continues to develop his career abroad.
