Moroka Swallows legend Steve Sekano has addressed the growing debate surrounding the future of the historic Soweto club, offering insight into the disagreements emerging as efforts to revive the Dube Birds gather momentum.
Sekano has been associated with the latest revival initiative led by sports broadcaster and businessman Walter Mokoena, who recently relaunched the club under the name Moroka Swallows Sports Club (SC).
The development has sparked questions about the future of the Dube Birds Supporters and Shareholders Steering Committee, which was established through the “Bring Back The Birds” campaign to help restore the club to its former glory.
The committee had been working to secure sponsorships, attract investors and mobilise supporters in an effort to return Swallows to professional football. However, Mokoena’s announcement of a separate revival structure has created uncertainty about the committee’s involvement in the club’s future.
Sekano Explains Mokoena’s Position
Speaking about the situation, Sekano explained that Mokoena had approached former Swallows players and invited them to become involved in his new project.
According to Sekano, Mokoena questioned the contribution of the existing steering committee, arguing that its primary responsibility had been to bring the club back, while he had independently established the new organisation.
The comments have added to the debate about whether the original revival campaign and Mokoena’s project can work together towards a common goal.
Steering Committee Seeks Clarity
The steering committee previously expressed disappointment over the launch of the new initiative, indicating that it had not been consulted about the plans.
The group subsequently called for an urgent meeting with Mokoena and representatives of the newly established organisation to clarify its role and determine how it could contribute to the club’s revival.
The disagreement has raised concerns about coordination between the various parties involved in bringing the historic football institution back to prominence.
Swallows Begin a New Chapter
Mokoena’s revival project aims to rebuild Moroka Swallows as a multi-sport organisation, with football remaining its main focus. The structure also incorporates netball and basketball, with plans to introduce additional sporting codes in the future.
The initiative comes after years of financial difficulties and instability that ultimately led to Swallows selling its Premier Soccer League status to Marumo Gallants in 2024.
Since then, efforts have been directed towards rebuilding the club from regional football, with the long-term ambition of returning to the professional ranks.
Mokoena has also outlined his vision of developing Swallows into one of Africa’s biggest sporting organisations, while discussions have reportedly included possible venues in Soweto.
For supporters of the Dube Birds, the priority remains restoring a club with a rich history in South African football. However, the differences surrounding the steering committee’s role will need to be addressed if the various stakeholders are to work towards a shared vision for Swallows’ future.
