McCarthy Admits He Never Expected to Score Against Dortmund

South African defender Aden McCarthy has expressed his happiness after scoring his first goal for Sabah FK during their UEFA Champions League clash against German giants Borussia Dortmund.

The 22-year-old found the back of the net in Sabah's 2-1 defeat to Dortmund, marking an important personal milestone following his departure from Kaizer Chiefs during the off-season.

Since joining the Malaysian club, McCarthy has been gaining experience in a new football environment while continuing to develop his game. Scoring against a well-established European side represents a memorable moment in his career, even though his team ultimately failed to secure a positive result.

Speaking after the match, the young defender reflected on the unpredictable nature of football, explaining that any team can produce special moments regardless of the strength or reputation of its opponents.

McCarthy stressed that players must believe in their abilities and position themselves correctly to take advantage of scoring opportunities when they arise.

"It just shows anything is possible, no matter who you come against, the ball is round, anything is possible, so as long as you put yourself in those positions to score, it can happen," McCarthy told ANews.

The former Kaizer Chiefs player also admitted that he had not expected to score against the German giants. According to him, the goal was an unexpected moment during the match rather than something he had anticipated before stepping onto the pitch.

"I showed it tonight, I never expected to score, you don't plan for these things, but it just happened in the moment, so I am very happy," he added.

The goal represents an encouraging moment for McCarthy as he continues his career outside South Africa. Facing experienced opponents from prominent European clubs provides an opportunity for the defender to improve his skills, build confidence and gain valuable international experience.

Despite Sabah's 2-1 loss, McCarthy's contribution offered a positive highlight for the team. His goal demonstrated that the Malaysian side could threaten a respected opponent, even when the result did not go their way.

For the young South African, the achievement could provide additional motivation as he looks to establish himself at Sabah FK and continue progressing in his professional career.

While the defeat will disappoint the team, McCarthy will be encouraged by reaching this personal milestone against one of Germany's most recognisable football clubs.
