African Stars Provide Update on Gerald Guther After Pirates Defeat

African Stars Make Decision on Gerald Guther Following Orlando Pirates Elimination

African Stars have reached a conclusion about head coach Gerald Guther after their exit from the CAF Champions League against South African powerhouse Orlando Pirates.

The Namibian club's run in the tournament ended after a challenging two-game series, with the Pirates securing a resounding 5-0 aggregate win to advance to the group stages of Africa's top club competition.

In light of the disappointing results, attention has turned to Guther's role at the club and the decision African Stars made regarding his future after such a brief tenure.

Guther took over in September 2026 after Ronnie Kanalelo left to manage Betway Premiership team Marumo Gallants. His hiring came during a crucial time, as he was expected to steer African Stars through their Champions League qualification efforts.

With high hopes of making an impact on the continental scene, Guther faced a formidable challenge against an experienced Pirates team.

During the first leg, African Stars struggled and lost 1-0. The second leg in Soweto was even tougher, with the Pirates showcasing their skill and winning 4-0, resulting in an aggregate defeat of 5-0.

The outcome underscored the experience gap between the two teams, with Pirates effectively capitalizing on defensive errors and demonstrating their offensive prowess and confidence.

In his reflections after the defeat, Guther acknowledged the valuable lessons learned and praised Pirates for their quality, noting their movement and composure made it difficult for his team to cope.

That said, the defeat may not fully represent Guther's capabilities at the helm, as he was appointed just before these critical continental matches, leaving little time to implement his strategies or prepare his squad.

Now, African Stars must shift focus to domestic competitions, where the coaching staff can evaluate the team’s development and pinpoint areas that need improvement.

The club’s decision regarding Guther is significant, particularly given the context of his appointment and the limited duration he has been in charge.

Currently, the priority will be on how African Stars bounce back from their continental setback and if they can establish a stronger foundation for the rest of the season.
