Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has discussed his recent meeting with club chairman Tlhopie Motsepe following the team's surprising exit from the CAF Champions League.
The Brazilians were eliminated in the second qualifying round by Angolan team Wiliete, who advanced on away goals with an aggregate score of 1-1. This unexpected outcome ended Sundowns' continental run prematurely.
In his post-match press conference after Sundowns' 1-0 victory over Marumo Gallants in the Carling Knockout Cup's round of 16 at Loftus Versfeld Stadium, Cardoso reflected on the disappointment of the defeat, especially considering Sundowns' previous success in Africa, where the team has reached the semi-finals and finals in recent seasons. Cardoso himself has participated in three consecutive finals.
He emphasized the need for the team to quickly regain confidence and tackle upcoming challenges. The 54-year-old described the win against Gallants as a demonstration of their determination, highlighting that Sundowns must show their fans they're committed to representing the club with pride.
Cardoso commended Motsepe for his supportive speech to the team post-elimination, noting that the chairman managed to instill motivation and focus on future endeavors.
While Cardoso recognized the disappointment the club feels, he underscored the necessity of moving forward rather than lingering on past failures. For him, the match against Gallants offered a vital opportunity to alleviate some emotional strain on the team and begin rebuilding their confidence.
Sundowns will now direct their attention to the Betway Premiership, where they are set to host Durban City at Royal Bafokeng Stadium this Saturday evening.
