Meet the SA Player Who Rose From Homeless English Football to Champions League Superstardom

South African Manasse Kianga's Incredible Rise: From the Ninth Tier of England to the Champions League

Manasse Kianga, a South African footballer, has achieved an extraordinary feat by ascending from the lesser echelons of English football to the esteemed UEFA Champions League with Slovan Bratislava, the Slovakian champions.

The 24-year-old striker's voyage serves as a poignant reminder that a player's career can be significantly impacted by talent, determination, and the right opportunity, even when the path to professional football is paved with impediments.

The extraordinary distance Kianga has travelled in a mere few years has garnered attention, as evidenced by his meteoric ascent. The South African forward, who previously competed for Rossington Main, a non-league club in England's lower football divisions, is currently a member of a squad that is pitted against some of the most prominent clubs in Europe.

His tenure at Rossington Main was a critical period in his personal growth. He established himself as a dangerous attacking player by scoring 51 goals in 115 appearances for the English club between 2019 and 2025. Additionally, he assisted the team in achieving promotion during the 2022/23 campaign.

Nevertheless, his aspirations were significantly impeded in 2024 when he was compelled to return to South Africa due to his inability to secure a permanent work permit. Kianga persisted in his pursuit of an alternative opportunity, refusing to permit the disappointment to terminate his aspirations to play for the European national team.

In 2025, he seized the opportunity to join Lokomotíva Košice, a third-tier team in Slovakia. In 2026, his performances were instrumental in his transfer to Slovan Bratislava, one of the most prominent clubs in the country.

His breakthrough occurred as a result of an injury crisis that created an opening in the senior team. Kianga was promoted from the reserves and quickly established himself as a prominent figure under the tutelage of former Manchester City player Yaya Touré.

During the Champions League qualifying campaign against Swedish side Mjällby, he experienced one of his most significant moments. In the first leg, Kianga scored a stoppage-time winner, which was instrumental in Slovan Bratislava's 2-1 triumph and bolstered the club's momentum toward the league phase of the competition.

Slovan subsequently achieved qualification, which afforded him the opportunity to contend on the most significant club stage in European football.

Kianga's narrative is particularly motivating for football enthusiasts in South Africa. His progression illustrates that players who do not follow conventional professional pathways can still establish themselves in the elite level of football by maintaining consistent performances and persevering.

The forward now has the opportunity to establish himself against top-tier opposition and further his career development, despite the intense competition for regular playing time.

Kianga's voyage from the ninth tier of English football to the Champions League is more than a remarkable personal accomplishment. It serves as a motivational example for would-be South African footballers who persist in their conviction that their aspirations can be realised.
