Doctor Khumalo on SAFA appointment: “I never saw it coming”

Kaizer Chiefs legend Doctor Khumalo has been appointed deputy chairperson of the South African Football Association (SAFA) Technical Committee, marking another important milestone in his distinguished football career.

The appointment was confirmed following SAFA’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Sandton last weekend. Khumalo, one of South Africa’s most respected football figures, will serve under committee chairperson Jack Maluleke and contribute to the development of football across the country.

The 59-year-old former Bafana Bafana midfielder admitted that the appointment came as a surprise, expressing gratitude to those who trusted him with the responsibility. He thanked SAFA president Danny Jordaan, members of the NEC, Kaizer Chiefs chairman Kaizer Motaung and Orlando Pirates chairman Irvin Khoza for their confidence in him. He also acknowledged his late parents and family for their support throughout his journey.

A few days after the announcement, Khumalo visited SAFA House, where he briefly met Jordaan and SAFA Technical Director Molefi Ntseki. Jordaan congratulated him on his appointment, describing the position as the beginning of an important journey. Khumalo responded by saying he was humbled by the opportunity and ready to begin his work.

Khumalo enjoyed an illustrious playing career with Kaizer Chiefs and represented Bafana Bafana during their historic triumph at the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations on home soil. Following his retirement, he gained coaching experience as an assistant at Chiefs before holding technical and coaching positions at Baroka FC. He also possesses a UEFA B Licence and other coaching qualifications.

In his new position, Khumalo will contribute to football development, coaching education and the improvement of technical standards nationwide. He replaces the previous deputy chairperson, who was suspended.

SAFA is pursuing its Vision 2030 strategy, which prioritises school football, player development and national teams. Khumalo’s experience is expected to strengthen these efforts as he focuses on serving South African football rather than pursuing personal recognition.
