They Are Destroying South African Football– Sundowns Legend Drop Explosive Transfer Market Bombshell

‘Sundowns Can Get Anyone They Want’: Bricks Mudau Raises Alarm Over Transfer Market Dominance

Former Mamelodi Sundowns centre-back Johannes “Bricks” Mudau believes the Tshwane giants have raised the bar so high in the transfer market that their Premier Soccer League (PSL) rivals are struggling to compete for the country’s top footballing talent.

Sundowns have established themselves as one of South Africa’s most powerful clubs, combining their success on the pitch with significant financial resources and an impressive recruitment strategy. Their ability to attract established stars has strengthened their squad while creating a challenging environment for competitors hoping to secure similar quality players.

Speaking to KickOff, Mudau suggested that the Brazilians’ financial muscle has changed the dynamics of player recruitment in the PSL, making it increasingly difficult for other clubs to negotiate deals on favourable terms.

“I think Sundowns they’ve set a trend where they get anyone they want, at any price, and it becomes difficult for the other teams because they don’t have bigger pockets like Sundowns,” Mudau said.

His remarks highlight the growing financial gap between Sundowns and several of their domestic competitors, particularly traditional heavyweights Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, who must carefully manage their recruitment budgets while attempting to assemble squads capable of challenging for major honours.

The debate surrounding transfer fees recently gained attention following revelations by TS Galaxy chairman Tim Sukazi about Kaizer Chiefs’ reported R4 million offer for Seluleko Mahlambi. Sukazi indicated that the amount was insufficient, with the club demanding R10 million for the player.

For Mudau, situations like these demonstrate how Sundowns’ spending power has influenced the market, potentially making it more expensive for other teams to recruit promising players.

“This makes things not easy for the boys to get a chance to leave their current clubs and go play somewhere bigger. Sundowns has raised the bar pertaining the movement of players,” he added.

Beyond the financial implications, Mudau also questioned the impact of Sundowns’ recruitment strategy on squad depth and playing opportunities.

The former defender believes the club’s ability to attract numerous high-quality players can leave some footballers struggling for regular minutes, despite possessing the talent to become important figures at other PSL sides.

He suggested that Sundowns’ extensive squad gives them a considerable advantage, allowing the club to maintain competition for places while limiting opportunities for players who might otherwise become regular starters elsewhere.

Nevertheless, Sundowns’ recruitment approach reflects their ambition to remain competitive across domestic and continental competitions.

Mudau’s comments have reignited an important discussion about financial power, transfer fees and competitive balance in South African football. While Sundowns continue to strengthen their position, their rivals face the challenge of finding smarter recruitment strategies to close the gap.

Ultimately, the question is whether other PSL clubs can develop sustainable models capable of challenging the Brazilians’ financial dominance without compromising their own long-term stability.
