South African Rugby Star Hyron Andrews Found Dead At Team Hotel In France

Tragically, lock Hyron Andrews of the Emirates Lions was discovered dead at their French hotel on Friday morning, just days before the historic Investec Champions Cup debut of the Johannesburg-based side against La Rochelle. South African rugby has been in mourning ever since.

The 31-year-old Andrews was allegedly found in a locked shower cubicle in the spa area of the Hôtel Atalante on Île de Ré, close to La Rochelle, at around 10:15 in the morning. Even after arriving at the scene, emergency personnel were unable to revive him.

Andrews reportedly fell at the team hotel and died as a result, according to SA Rugby. The French government has begun looking into what happened leading up to his death and has ordered an autopsy to determine the cause.

There has been no evidence of foul play, and preliminary reports indicate that the death was accidental. Nevertheless, the details are still up in the air as the investigation continues.

Despite the tragedy's impact on the Lions' European campaign, the club has confirmed that Saturday's Champions Cup match against La Rochelle will go ahead as scheduled after consulting with the players. Andrews will be remembered during the match.

On behalf of the family and friends of the rugby player, there will be a minute of quiet before this weekend's Investec Champions Cup and EPCR Challenge Cup matches.

After the loss, Lions CEO Rudolf Straeuli spoke about how devastated he was. He praised Andrews, who had just joined the team, as a talented player and an important part of the Lions' family.

Before relocating to England to play for Sale Sharks, Andrews got his professional start with the Sharks. He had already played in three matches for the Lions this season before returning to South Africa to join them in the United Rugby Championship.

Andrews, a former Junior Springbok, was tragically killed while advancing his career with the Johannesburg side.

Aside from his rugby career, he had a family life as a husband to Maiglin and a dad to two little boys, Emerson and Hendrix.

Members of his family, friends, teammates, and the rugby community at large have received condolences from the Lions, South African Rugby, and the sport as a whole.

As condolences pour in, the rugby community waits for word from the French government about what happened leading up to Andrews' death.
