Swallows Legend Steve Sekano Linked To New Revival As Steering Committee Dispute Deepens

Moroka Swallows Bombshell! Steve Sekano Breaks Silence On His Exit From Steering Committee

Moroka Swallows legend Steve Sekano has found himself at the centre of renewed discussions surrounding the future of the historic Soweto club after explaining his position amid the latest efforts to bring the Dube Birds back to life.

The former Swallows star has been linked to the new revival initiative led by sports broadcaster and businessman Walter Mokoena, who has relaunched the club under the name Moroka Swallows Sports Club (SC).

The development comes after disagreements emerged over the role of the Dube Birds Supporters and Shareholders Steering Committee, which was established through the “Bring Back The Birds” campaign to help revive the famous football institution.

The committee had been working to attract support, sponsorship and investment, with the ultimate objective of restoring Swallows to professional football. However, the announcement of Mokoena’s new project raised questions about whether the committee would be involved in the club’s future.

Sekano’s involvement in the revival initiative has added another dimension to the discussion, particularly because he is a respected figure in the club’s history.

Mokoena recently announced the revival of Moroka Swallows as a multi-sport organisation, with football remaining its central activity. The new structure also includes netball and basketball, while plans have been outlined to introduce additional sporting codes in the future.

The initiative represents an attempt to rebuild the club following years of financial difficulties and instability.

Swallows, one of South Africa’s historic football institutions, sold its Premier Soccer League status to Marumo Gallants in 2024 after financial problems undermined its position in the top flight.

The new organisation has begun competing at regional level, with ambitions to rebuild the club and eventually return to professional football.

Mokoena has said he wants to develop Swallows into one of the biggest sports clubs on the African continent, with discussions also taking place around potential venues in Soweto.

The revival project has also exposed differences over the committee’s role in the process.

The steering committee previously stated that it had worked towards bringing Swallows back and expressed disappointment that it had not been consulted about Mokoena’s new initiative.

It subsequently indicated that it wanted an urgent meeting with Mokoena and representatives of the newly established organisation to clarify its position.

However, Sekano, speaking about Mokoena’s position, said the businessman had approached former Swallows players and invited them to join the new project.

Sekano explained that Mokoena questioned the steering committee’s contribution, arguing that its original task had been to bring the club back but that he had established the new organisation independently.

These comments have intensified the debate about the relationship between the committee’s original campaign and the new revival structure.

For Swallows supporters, the central concern remains the restoration of a club that has played an important role in South African football for generations.
