Miguel Cardoso's Reveal of Trust in Monnapule Saleng After Months of Exile: Sundowns Bombshell
The long-awaited return to competitive action of winger Monnapule Saleng was explained by Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso, who described Saleng's brief appearance against Marumo Gallants as a deliberate demonstration of trust.
On Tuesday, Sundowns beat Gallants 1-0 in the Carling Knockout Cup, earning Saleng his season-opening competitive appearance. Even though he didn't come on until late in the game, it was a big moment for a player trying to get back on track at Chloorkop.
After allegedly being benched for months due to disciplinary concerns, the former Orlando Pirates winger had a tough time. He did not show up for preseason training and did not participate in the second half of the CAF Champions League final.
After that, he trained independently for a long time before Sundowns decided to bring him back into the team.
The onus is on Saleng to demonstrate that he is worthy of more playing time; however, Cardoso has already made it plain that the club is willing to offer him another chance.
A Decision by Cardoso: An Explanation
Rather than permanently excluding players, Sundowns' strategy revolves around giving them a chance to return, as Cardoso explained after the match at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.
To start, I've always been upfront about the fact that those are the club's core values, and they're also the values that I instill in my players and strive to spread. The Portuguese coach emphasized the importance of including every individual in the process.
Although Cardoso stressed that the winger would be evaluated using the same criteria as the rest of the team, he did confirm that Saleng had tried to resolve the issue.
"He took the necessary steps," Cardoso went on to say.
"Like all the other players, he will have his chances based on the performance that will be absolutely continuously evaluated."
The amount of playing time Saleng gets going forward, according to the coach, will depend on his consistency.
He will have greater opportunities if he can maintain consistency. He will have fewer opportunities if he experiences fluctuations.
Based on his remarks, it seems like Saleng's comeback won't put him back in his old role on the squad. On the contrary, it's a new chance for him to prove his worth.
Justification for Saleng's Delayed Entry
Sundowns could have gone with a more defensive player to shore up their razor-thin lead, but Cardoso said that bringing Saleng on was deliberate.
