Red Card Blow Threatens Rulani Mokwena’s Continental Dream After Away Victory

Pyramids Extend Winning Run Under Rulani Mokwena as South African Coach Closes in on CAF Champions League Progress

South African coach Rulani Mokwena continued his impressive start at Egyptian giants Pyramids FC after guiding his side to a crucial 1-0 victory over South Sudanese champions El Merriekh Bentiu in the first leg of the CAF Champions League second preliminary round on Friday.

The result extended Mokwena's winning streak to 10 consecutive matches across all competitions, further strengthening his growing reputation in African football.

Pyramids travelled to Juba International Stadium determined to secure a positive result away from home, and they delivered when it mattered most. Mahmoud Saber scored the decisive goal in the first half, giving the Egyptian outfit a narrow advantage ahead of the return fixture.

Saber Makes the Difference

Pyramids started the encounter on the front foot, looking to impose their technical superiority and control proceedings against their South Sudanese opponents.

Their attacking efforts eventually paid off in the 30th minute when Saber found the back of the net with a powerful strike from inside the penalty area.

The goal rewarded Pyramids for their early dominance and provided Mokwena's men with the breakthrough they needed to settle into the contest.

Although the visitors created opportunities to extend their advantage, they were unable to find a second goal. El Merriekh Bentiu also attempted to fight back, but Pyramids maintained their defensive organisation to protect their lead.

The match became increasingly challenging as the home side searched for an equaliser, forcing the Egyptian club to remain disciplined until the final whistle.

Mokwena's Impressive Winning Streak

The victory represents another important milestone for Mokwena, who has enjoyed a remarkable beginning to his tenure at Pyramids.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates coach has quickly established a winning mentality at the Egyptian club, with his team producing encouraging performances domestically and on the continental stage.

Pyramids have also made an excellent start to their Egyptian Premier League campaign, winning their opening six matches to collect 18 points.

Their domestic form, combined with their progress in the CAF Champions League qualifiers, has placed them in a strong position as they pursue further success this season.

Pyramids previously eliminated Kenya's Gor Mahia with an impressive 7-1 aggregate victory in the first preliminary round.

Defensive Setback Ahead of Return Leg

Despite the positive result, Pyramids suffered a setback late in Friday's encounter when defender Mahmoud Marei received a second yellow card and was sent off in the 89th minute.

His dismissal means Mokwena will have to adjust his defensive options for the return leg.

Pyramids will host El Merriekh Bentiu in Cairo on Saturday, 24 October, knowing that another disciplined performance could secure their place in the CAF Champions League group stage.

For Mokwena, the immediate objective will be to maintain his team's momentum while ensuring they avoid complacency.

With 10 consecutive victories behind them, Pyramids are building confidence, and South African football supporters will be watching closely to see whether the former PSL tactician can guide the Egyptian champions to another successful continental campaign.
