Kaizer Chiefs Ladies have missed out on promotion to the Hollywoodbets Super League despite ending their Gauteng Women's Sasol League campaign with a 1-0 victory over the University of Johannesburg.
The result was not enough to secure a place in the national promotional playoffs, leaving Chiefs Ladies in third position overall. The team will therefore remain in the second tier for another season after falling short of their promotion target in their first campaign at this level.
Despite the disappointment, the victory over the University of Johannesburg provided a positive finish to the season for Amakhosi's women's team. However, their fate depended on the final league standings and the results of other teams competing for the opportunity to reach the top flight.
Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies delivered an impressive performance on the final day, defeating Mito Stars Ladies 4-0 to finish at the top of the Gauteng Women's Sasol League. Their victory strengthened their position as the leading team in the competition.
However, Sundowns Ladies cannot take the promotion place because their senior team already competes in the Hollywoodbets Super League. This means that another eligible team must represent the Gauteng region in the national promotional playoffs.
Wits University FC took advantage of the opportunity by defeating JVW 2-0 to secure the playoff position. The victory gives Wits a chance to compete for promotion to the country's top women's football division.
For Chiefs Ladies, the outcome will be difficult to accept, especially after securing a win in their final match. The team had hoped to finish the campaign in a position that would keep its promotion ambitions alive, but third place was not enough to achieve that objective.
Nevertheless, their first season in the second tier has provided valuable experience as the club continues to develop its women's football programme. The players and technical team will now have time to assess their performances, identify areas for improvement and prepare for another attempt at promotion.
Remaining in the Gauteng Women's Sasol League means Chiefs Ladies will have another opportunity to compete for a higher position next season. They will need consistency throughout the campaign if they are to challenge for the title or secure a place in the promotional playoffs.
For now, the focus will be on learning from the disappointment and building a stronger team for the future. Although promotion has slipped out of their hands this season, Chiefs Ladies will hope to return with greater determination and a renewed push for the top flight.
The result marks a frustrating end to their campaign, but their ambition of reaching the Hollywoodbets Super League remains alive.
