Drogba Raises Concerns About Stadiums and VAR in the PSL

AmaZulu head coach Arthur Zwane has explained why leaving the club would not be an easy decision for him amid reports linking him with a possible role in the South African Football Association (SAFA) technical team under new Bafana Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane.

Zwane joined AmaZulu in October 2024 alongside the club’s then DDC coach Vusimuzi Vilakazi. Since his arrival in Durban, the former Kaizer Chiefs coach has helped the team improve its performances and establish itself as a competitive side in the Betway Premiership.

Last season, Usuthu finished inside the league’s top four, an achievement that provided a strong foundation for their current campaign. The team has continued to make progress and currently sits third on the league table with 19 points from eight matches, four points behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.

Their impressive start has raised expectations among supporters, with the club hoping to maintain its form and challenge for an even higher position this season.

However, Zwane’s future has also attracted attention following reports that Mosimane could be interested in having him as part of his Bafana Bafana technical team.

Speaking to the media on the sidelines of the 2026 Carling Knockout Cup last 16 draw, Zwane explained that joining AmaZulu was a major decision because he had spent 24 years at Kaizer Chiefs. He revealed that he was comfortable at his former club and wanted to ensure that chairman Kaizer Motaung approved his departure before accepting the opportunity presented by AmaZulu president Sandile Zungu.

Zwane said Zungu explained his vision for the club and the type of coach he wanted to lead the project. The AmaZulu coach believed he was the right person for the job and was confident that he could help the team grow.

Although the club initially struggled to find consistency, Zwane believes they have developed together. He also credited Zungu and the club’s management for giving the coaching staff the freedom to work with the players and understand the environment.

Zwane praised the support from the supporters, board and management, explaining that the positive working relationship has contributed to his happiness at the club. He admitted that leaving would therefore require serious consideration.

Meanwhile, Ivory Coast legend Didier Drogba has questioned whether the Premier Soccer League (PSL) has the infrastructure needed to become Africa’s best football league. Drogba acknowledged South Africa’s financial resources and the national team’s strong performances but highlighted concerns about stadium facilities and the lack of proper Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology. He believes these shortcomings remain major obstacles to the league’s development, arguing that improved infrastructure is essential if the PSL wants to compete with the continent’s leading leagues.

For Zwane, the immediate priority appears to be continuing the progress made at AmaZulu. With the team competing near the top of the standings, he has an opportunity to build on last season’s achievement and help the club pursue its ambitions.

Although the reports linking him with SAFA have created uncertainty about his long-term future, Zwane made it clear that he is enjoying the challenge at AmaZulu and wants to see the project develop further. He also acknowledged that only time will determine what happens next.
