Thabo Cele’s career has taken a remarkable turn since departing Kaizer Chiefs. The 29-year-old midfielder, who joined the Soweto giants from Europe in early 2025 and contributed to their 2025 Nedbank Cup triumph, found himself sidelined under coach Fernando da Cruz. Left out of the pre-season tour and training alone, his contract was mutually terminated in September 2026.
Sundowns moved swiftly, signing Cele as a free agent on a two-year deal. Within weeks of arriving at Chloorkop, the former Chiefs player has already collected two major trophies.
He was part of the squad that secured the FIFA African-Asian-Pacific Cup and then made his official debut as a late substitute in the MTN8 final, helping Masandawana defeat Orlando Pirates 2-0 at Moses Mabhida Stadium.
Cele has spoken openly about the transition. “Football is life; it has been a difficult journey, but one I had to overcome,” he said after the MTN8 victory. “It’s a blessing… having joined the club recently, winning these two trophies is very special for me.”
At a club renowned for its winning culture and depth, Cele is embracing the competition in midfield and focusing on contributing to further success.
His rapid integration and early silverware underline how quickly he has flourished in the Yellow Nation after a challenging exit from Naturena.
