African Stars Part Ways With Gerald Güther After Orlando Pirates Defeats
Namibian football giants African Stars have reportedly parted ways with head coach Gerald Güther just weeks after appointing him on a reported two-year contract, following the club's disappointing exit from the CAF Champions League.
The decision, reported on Wednesday, 28 October 2026, comes after African Stars suffered consecutive defeats against South African powerhouse Orlando Pirates in the preliminary rounds of the continental competition. The results ended their hopes of reaching the group stages and raised questions about the club's immediate future.
According to reports, the club's management decided to part ways with Güther after the disappointing campaign. The coach had only recently taken charge of the team, replacing Ronnie Kanalelo, who left to join Betway Premiership side Marumo Gallants.
Güther's appointment was intended to usher in a new chapter for the Namibian champions, who were hoping to make a strong impression on the continental stage. However, his time in charge proved remarkably short, with the two matches against Pirates reportedly being his only official games at the helm before his departure.
African Stars entered the tie determined to challenge Pirates for a place in the next round, but the Soweto giants proved too strong over the two legs. The Namibian side lost the opening encounter 1-0 in Gaborone before suffering another defeat in the return fixture in South Africa.
For Pirates, the victory represented an important step towards their continental ambitions. For African Stars, however, the outcome was a major disappointment, particularly given the club's status as one of Namibia's leading football teams.
Güther arrived with expectations of improving the team's performances and helping the club compete against stronger opposition. Yet, taking charge shortly before such an important continental assignment presented a difficult challenge, especially against a Pirates side with considerably more competitive match experience.
Before the tie, Güther acknowledged the limited preparation time available to him and explained that his focus was on improving the existing squad rather than making significant changes. He also highlighted the importance of defensive organisation, teamwork and improving the team's overall approach.
His reported departure has therefore sparked debate about whether African Stars made the right decision or acted too quickly after two disappointing results.
While the club's ambitions and expectations are understandable, rebuilding a team and implementing a new playing philosophy usually require time. Judging a coach solely on two matches against experienced continental opposition may raise questions about the club's long-term planning.
Nevertheless, African Stars will now need to focus on finding a suitable replacement and restoring confidence as they turn their attention to domestic football.
The big question remains whether dismissing Güther was justified or whether he deserved more time to demonstrate his abilities. What is clear is that African Stars must carefully consider their next appointment if they hope to avoid further instability and maintain their position among Namibia's leading clubs.
