“Kaizer Chiefs Are No Longer the Mighty Amakhosi We Once Knew” – Baba Mthethwa

Baba Mthethwa has voiced his disappointment with Kaizer Chiefs, questioning the club’s continued failure to win major trophies despite its status as one of South Africa’s most popular and historically successful football teams.

His criticism comes after Amakhosi suffered a 1-0 defeat to Zambia’s Red Arrows in the first leg of their CAF Confederation Cup encounter. The result has left the Soweto giants under pressure to deliver a stronger performance in the return leg if they hope to keep their continental campaign alive.

Mthethwa believes Chiefs have struggled to maintain the winning mentality expected of a club of their stature. He also expressed concern about the frustration that has been building among supporters who have waited for the team to return to winning ways.

“Have they [Chiefs] forgotten that in the 26-letter alphabet, there is a W, and the W stands for winning?” he asked.

According to Mthethwa, the latest defeat has added to the disappointment felt by Chiefs supporters, not only in South Africa but also among fans across the continent and beyond. He believes the club’s reputation creates high expectations that must be matched by performances on the pitch.

He also raised concerns about an apparent confrontation between two Chiefs players during the match against Red Arrows, suggesting that the incident could point to possible tensions within the squad. However, the circumstances surrounding the alleged exchange have not been fully established.

Despite his strong criticism, Mthethwa acknowledged the club’s immense popularity, rich history and ability to attract supporters across different generations.

“Kaizer Chiefs is a giant. Kaizer Chiefs is well supported,” he said, while noting that fans are becoming increasingly frustrated by the prolonged wait for silverware.

His remarks have reignited debate about the gap between Kaizer Chiefs’ standing in South African football and their recent results, with supporters hoping the team can improve its consistency and rediscover its winning form.
