Manqoba Mngqithi Breaks Silence on Aziz Ki Reports After Shock Young Africans Exit
Former Mamelodi Sundowns coach Manqoba Mngqithi has addressed speculation surrounding his relationship with Young Africans midfielder Stephane Aziz Ki following his unexpected departure from the Tanzanian giants.
Mngqithi recently parted ways with Young Africans after a brief spell in charge, bringing an abrupt end to his tenure despite making progress in continental competition. His departure has sparked discussions about what went wrong behind the scenes, with reports suggesting that disagreements involving Aziz Ki may have contributed to the situation.
Speaking on Metro FM’s Sports Night Amplified with Andile Ncube, the South African tactician responded to the allegations, offering insight into the circumstances surrounding the midfielder and his tactical approach.
“I don’t think the issue revolves around me playing Aziz, and I would be lying if I said that; I don’t want to create the wrong impression,” Mngqithi explained.
He went on to suggest that the midfielder might have communicated his concerns about the coach’s playing system to members of the club’s management.
“The reality is the management knew that as soon as Aziz was going to be important for the club. What I can tell you, what I think is the case, is that it is possible Aziz might have spoken to some members of management to indicate that he would not like to play in my system,” he added.
Although Mngqithi raised the possibility of such discussions, his comments did not establish that Aziz Ki was responsible for his departure.
The coach's exit has attracted attention because of his promising overall record during his short spell at Young Africans. He reportedly recorded 10 victories, two draws and one defeat in 13 matches across all competitions, while also guiding the club into the CAF Champions League group stages.
However, consecutive domestic setbacks, including a defeat against bitter rivals Simba SC and a goalless draw against TRA United, increased the pressure surrounding his position.
Beyond the speculation about Aziz Ki, Mngqithi has also highlighted concerns about professionalism and player discipline at the club, suggesting that differences with management extended beyond team selection.
His comments have therefore raised fresh questions about the balance between a coach's authority, the influence of senior players and the expectations of club management.
For South African football supporters, the situation presents another talking point following the former Sundowns mentor's departure from Tanzania.
