Tanzanian giants Young Africans SC have officially terminated the contract of South African head coach Manqoba Mngqithi following a frustrating domestic result on Saturday, October 24, 2026. The decision marks a sudden end to Mngqithi’s brief stint with the defending champions, coming after a goalless draw against TRA United at Sheikh Amri Abeid Stadium in Arusha triggered swift intervention from the club's board.
Mngqithi joined Yanga in July 2026 after establishing an impressive track record in South African football, most notably through his trophy-laden years with Mamelodi Sundowns. His arrival in Dar es Salaam was met with high expectations, as club officials sought a veteran tactician capable of cementing their domestic supremacy while steering the team deep into the CAF Champions League.
Despite the early promise, recent domestic slip-ups rapidly eroded leadership confidence. The scoreless display against TRA United came right on the heels of a damaging 2-1 loss to fierce rivals Simba SC in the Kariakoo Derby. Together, those back-to-back setbacks left Yanga five points behind Simba after eight league matches, raising immediate alarms among club executives who view domestic title retention as non-negotiable.
Interestingly, Mngqithi’s overall record was far from poor. Across 13 total matches in all competitions, he compiled 10 victories, two draws, and just a single defeat. He kicked off his tenure by lifting the Tanzanian Community Shield with a 1-0 victory over Simba SC, and later secured Yanga’s spot in the CAF Champions League group stage thanks to a dominant 8-1 aggregate triumph over Madagascar's CFFA.
However, the intense scrutiny and relentless pressure at Young Africans leave little margin for error. With rival clubs gaining traction in the standings, the club's executive management opted for an immediate change in technical leadership rather than waiting for a turnaround. Attention now shifts toward identifying a replacement,as Yanga must quickly appoint either an interim caretaker or a new permanent head coach to steady the squad, regain momentum, and preserve their ambitions across both local and continental competitions.
