Manqoba Mngqithi has achieved another important milestone in his managerial career after leading Tanzanian club Young Africans SC to the group stages of the CAF Champions League with a convincing win over Madagascar’s CFFA.
The former Mamelodi Sundowns and Golden Arrows manager has enjoyed a promising beginning at Yanga, having already won the Community Shield and secured a place in the next stage of Africa’s leading club competition. His latest accomplishment highlights his ambition to establish himself among the continent’s top coaches.
Young Africans secured qualification on Wednesday after recording a 4-1 victory over CFFA in the second leg of their second preliminary-round tie. The result gave the Tanzanian champions an impressive 8-1 aggregate victory, making them the first club to book a place in this season’s group stages.
Yanga broke the deadlock in the 27th minute through Ibrahim Kazimoto, giving the home side an early advantage. Their attacking performance improved after the interval, with Selemani Mwalimu scoring twice in quick succession in the 49th and 53rd minutes.
Although CFFA found the net in the 75th minute to reduce the deficit, teenage striker Juma Issa Abushuri responded in the 82nd minute, restoring Yanga’s three-goal lead and completing the 4-1 victory.
The achievement gives Mngqithi a valuable opportunity to measure his team against some of Africa’s strongest clubs as Young Africans continue their pursuit of continental honours.
Away from his success in Tanzania, the South African coach has reportedly spoken about rejecting an opportunity to manage Kaizer Chiefs. Reports suggest he was concerned that the club’s proposed transfer budget would not be enough to assemble a competitive team.
