Jordaan Crosses Fingers Over Mbokazi as Pitso Could Face Defensive Selection Dilemma

South African football figure Irvin Khoza believes the potential inclusion of defender Mbokazi could present Bafana Bafana head coach Pitso Mosimane with a welcome selection dilemma as he assesses his defensive options.

Khoza has pointed to the quality already available in the national team’s defensive department, suggesting that adding Mbokazi to the group could further strengthen competition for places. Rather than viewing the situation as a problem, he believes Mosimane could benefit from having several high-quality defenders competing for limited positions.

“I think it will give coach Pitso a good problem, that he has many high-quality defenders, which now will include Mbokazi,” Khoza said.

The comments underline the importance of squad depth as Mosimane continues to shape his team. A coach is often faced with difficult decisions when several players are capable of performing at a high level, particularly in key positions such as central defence.

Mbokazi’s potential involvement would give Mosimane another player to consider when deciding on his defensive combinations. However, the defender would still need to prove his readiness through his performances and training, while adapting to the coach’s tactical demands.

Competition for places could also benefit the wider squad. With players aware that their positions are not guaranteed, the pressure to maintain high standards in training and matches can increase. At the same time, having reliable alternatives gives the coach greater flexibility when dealing with injuries, suspensions, fatigue or changes in form.

The depth could become particularly valuable during periods when Bafana Bafana face a demanding schedule involving competitive and international fixtures. Mosimane may need to rotate his squad while maintaining defensive stability.

Despite the optimism surrounding Mbokazi, Khoza’s comments do not suggest that his inclusion would automatically secure a starting position. Mosimane will ultimately have to determine which defenders best suit his tactical approach and provide the balance required by the team.

For now, Mbokazi’s potential arrival appears to add another layer of competition, giving Mosimane more defensive options as he continues building his squad.
