Zambia’s Red Arrows book place in CAF Confederation Cup group stages after penalty win over Cheifs

Zambia’s Red Arrows have advanced to the group stages of the CAF Confederation Cup after a dramatic 3-2 penalty shootout victory over Kaizer Chiefs in Durban on Friday. The second-leg match at Moses Mabhida Stadium finished 1-0 to the hosts, leaving the tie level at 1-1 on aggregate after Red Arrows had won the first leg by the same scoreline in Zambia.

Kaizer Chiefs went into the return fixture needing a win to force penalties or progress. They started strongly and controlled much of the possession, but the Zambian side defended well and limited clear chances in the first half. The breakthrough came in the 65th minute when Bradley Cross headed home a free-kick from Mfundo Vilakazi to level the aggregate score. The goal gave the Amakhosi real hope of a comeback with 25 minutes remaining.

Despite the momentum, Chiefs could not find a second goal. Mduduzi Shabalala wasted two good opportunities, including a one-on-one chance, while other efforts went wide or were saved. Red Arrows held firm, managed the game and forced the tie into a penalty shootout.

In the shootout, the visitors proved more clinical. They converted three of their kicks while Kaizer Chiefs missed three of theirs. Ethan Chislett’s miss proved decisive as Red Arrows completed a 3-2 win from the spot. The result ends Chiefs’ continental campaign before the group stage and hands the Zambian side a memorable qualification.

For Red Arrows, who are linked to the Zambian Air Force, the achievement is significant. They arrived in Durban with a slender lead and protected it well enough to advance. Their group-stage matches are expected to begin next month. Kaizer Chiefs, under coach Fernando da Cruz, will now focus on domestic fixtures, including a Carling Knockout Cup tie and a league match against Orlando Pirates. The early exit will increase pressure on the squad after they failed to convert their second-leg chances.

The outcome underlines how fine the margins can be in African club competitions. A single goal and better penalty composure decided which team progressed. Red Arrows will celebrate a famous result, while Chiefs must regroup quickly.
