Defending Champions Sundowns Set To Fire Head Coach After CAF Disaster

Miguel Cardoso Faces Uncertain Future at Sundowns as Komphela and Mngqithi Emerge as Interim Candidates

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso is reportedly facing an uncertain future at the club following the Brazilians’ disappointing elimination from the CAF Champions League at the hands of Angolan side Wiliete SC.

Reports suggest that Sundowns’ management is considering parting ways with the Portuguese tactician after the defending champions failed to qualify for the group stages of Africa’s premier club competition. However, the reported plans have not been officially confirmed by the club.

Sundowns’ elimination came after a frustrating two-legged encounter against Wiliete. The first leg in Angola ended in a goalless draw before the teams played out a 1-1 stalemate at Loftus Versfeld on Friday night. Tashreeq Matthews gave the South African giants an early lead, but experienced Angolan striker Mabululu equalised shortly after half-time.

Wiliete ultimately secured qualification on the away-goals rule, leaving Sundowns facing an unexpected setback in front of their home supporters.

According to reports, assistant coach Steve Komphela and former Sundowns mentor Manqoba Mngqithi have emerged as possible interim replacements should the club decide to dismiss Cardoso.

Komphela understands the club’s structure and has been part of its technical setup during previous successful campaigns. His familiarity with the squad could make him a practical option if Sundowns opt for an immediate coaching change.

Mngqithi also brings considerable experience, having previously coached Sundowns and contributed to their dominance in South African football. His subsequent experience with Tanzanian giants Young Africans could further strengthen his credentials.

Meanwhile, reports indicate that Cardoso’s representatives could meet Sundowns’ management on Monday to discuss his future and the financial implications of a possible contract termination. Neither the meeting nor a potential agreement has been officially confirmed.

With domestic competitions still underway, Sundowns must carefully consider their next move. For now, Cardoso’s position remains uncertain as speculation continues to grow over the club’s next steps.
