Ouaddou Reveals How He Plans to Help Orlando Pirates Handle Champions League Pressure

Ouaddou Reveals How He Plans to Help Orlando Pirates Handle Champions League Pressure

The head coach of Orlando Pirates, Abdeslam Ouaddou, has detailed the tactics he would use to get his youthful team mentally prepared to face the top clubs in Africa in the CAF Champions League group stage.

In the 2026–27 CAF Champions League, the Soweto giants beat African Stars FC of Namibia in the qualifying round and earned a spot in the group stage. Nevertheless, Ouaddou is cognisant of the fact that Pirates will face their true test when they encounter more seasoned opponents from the continent.

With a 1-0 lead after the first leg and a dominant display in the second, the Buccaneers cruised to a 5-0 aggregate triumph against African Stars. Spectators hoping to see the club compete for continental titles are ecstatic with their qualifying.

Regardless of the team's success, Ouaddou thinks his players need to work on being mentally tough so they can constantly produce when the pressure is on. Challenges beyond tactical preparation arise, as the coach is well aware, due to the youthfulness of his group and the introduction of several new players.

The emotional demands of representing one of South Africa's most storied football organisations may be overwhelming for some players, especially when playing for a team as prestigious as Pirates.

Ouaddou thinks it's his job to teach his players to be more self-assured, calm under pressure, and decisive when the stakes are high. In addition, he has brought attention to the possible advantages of psychiatric counselling, implying that a professional might aid players in acquiring the mental fortitude necessary to face the rigours of continental matches.

The pirates will go into the group stage determined to make the most of their opportunity, but Ouaddou knows that experience is just as important as youth. The Buccaneers have a long and illustrious history in the tournament, having won the CAF Champions League in 1995. Under Jose Riveiro's tutelage in 2024–25, they too made it to the semifinals.

Nevertheless, last year's disappointing elimination in the preliminary stages against FC Saint-Éloi Lupopo was a major setback for the team. This time around, Ouaddou wants his team to grow up and take a lesson from their failures.

The coach will have to keep a close eye on his team as the Pirates get ready to play various teams, some of whom may be playing away from home in difficult conditions with hostile audiences and high-pressure scenarios that may affect how well they play.

On Wednesday, October 28, the group stage draw will be place in Cairo, and the Pirates will soon find out who their opponents will be in their quest for a continental campaign victory.

In his pursuit of the Buccaneers' goal of reclaiming the top spot in continental football, Ouaddou must focus on three things: increasing confidence, establishing mental toughness, and assisting younger players in adjusting to the demands of African football.
