Former Kaizer Chiefs captain Itumeleng Khune has expressed strong support for the club to sign winger Elias Mokwana. Khune, speaking about the 27-year-old player, stated that bringing him on board would be beneficial for the Soweto giants.
When asked if Mokwana would be a good fit for Chiefs, Khune responded with a definitive "Definitely." He likened Mokwana to former Chiefs player “Shuffle” Pule, or Pule Mahlangu, emphasizing the winger's skill and boldness in taking on defenders. Khune highlighted that Mokwana has the ability to create opportunities and score goals, addressing a pressing need for the team.
Khune believes Mokwana could serve as a mentor to the younger players in the squad, stating, "These young boys can look up to him, and he will be holding their hands." He feels Mokwana's addition could enhance the team’s attacking capabilities.
Currently, Mokwana is a free agent after leaving Tunisian club Esperance de Tunis last September following a loan stint with Saudi Arabian team Al-Hazem. A proposed transfer to Moroccan club Wydad Athletic Club fell through due to registration issues. Before his international experience, Mokwana played for Sekhukhune United in the PSL, making 51 appearances and scoring five goals, and he has also earned 12 caps and scored two goals for Bafana Bafana under coach Hugo Broos.
Mokwana's representatives have already approached Chiefs regarding his availability, and he is eager to join the Amakhosi. The club is in search of improved offensive options, having netted only 13 goals across all competitions this season, and currently sits fifth in the PSL standings, needing more goals to advance.
Khune's favorable remarks lend credibility to discussions about Mokwana's potential transfer, especially as a respected former captain. Fans are now likely to pay closer attention to any developments regarding his signing while he remains available.
With his knack for getting past defenders and his ability to both score and assist, Mokwana presents an appealing option for a Chiefs team that has had trouble hitting the back of the net. The decision to pursue a deal will depend on how the club assesses his compatibility with the existing squad and their strategy moving forward this season. For now, Khune's endorsement makes it clear that he believes Elias Mokwana would be a valuable asset for Kaizer Chiefs.
