Mamelodi Sundowns Paid R4 Million for Gomolemo Kekana at 16, Sukazi Reveals

Mamelodi Sundowns reportedly paid R4 million to sign Gomolemo Kekana when the young footballer was just 16 years old, according to TS Galaxy president Tim Sukazi, highlighting the substantial financial commitments clubs can make when investing in promising talent.

Sukazi made the revelation during an interview with SNAWA, where he discussed the reported fee involved in Kekana’s move to Sundowns. The disclosure has sparked interest in the financial value attached to young footballers in South African football and the risks clubs accept when recruiting players who are still developing.

A reported R4 million fee for a 16-year-old represents a significant investment, particularly because there is no guarantee that a teenage prospect will eventually establish himself at senior level. At such an early stage, clubs typically assess potential, technical ability and long-term prospects when deciding whether a player is worth a substantial financial outlay.

Sundowns have developed a reputation for competing for major domestic honours while also strengthening their squad with talented players who can contribute to the club’s long-term ambitions. Recruiting promising youngsters can therefore be viewed as part of a broader strategy aimed at securing future talent.

However, developing a young footballer requires more than simply completing a transfer. Coaching, regular competitive football, physical development, tactical education and opportunities to gain experience can all influence whether a highly rated prospect fulfils his potential.

The revelation has consequently fuelled debate about the economics of youth recruitment. While some clubs may regard large fees for teenagers as worthwhile investments, others could favour established players capable of making an immediate impact.

Ultimately, the reported R4 million fee will only be judged in the context of Kekana’s development and future performances. Sukazi’s comments have nevertheless highlighted the increasingly significant financial stakes involved in identifying and securing South Africa’s next generation of football talent.
