Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Willard Katsande is celebrating a promising start to his coaching career in Zimbabwe after revealing that his first season in professional football management has been a positive experience.
The former Amakhosi star has begun making his mark on the touchline following his transition from professional football to coaching. Katsande believes his achievements during his debut season demonstrate that he is heading in the right direction as he works to establish himself in the coaching profession.
Reflecting on his progress, Katsande highlighted the recognition he has received during the campaign, including two Coach of the Month awards. He considers the achievements particularly encouraging given that this is his first season coaching adult professional football.
"It was a good rookie year for me, first time coaching professional, adult football. If you look at where I am, I've won two Coach of the Month awards, it's a success for me," Katsande said.
The two awards represent an important milestone for the former midfielder, who is now working to build a new career away from the pitch. Although coaching presents different challenges from playing, his early recognition provides encouragement as he continues gaining experience.
Katsande enjoyed a memorable playing career, particularly at Kaizer Chiefs, where he became a familiar figure among supporters. He was known for his physical presence, determination, discipline and commitment in midfield, qualities that helped him compete at the highest level of South African football.
His playing experience also exposed him to different tactical approaches, coaching philosophies and the demands of managing a professional dressing room. However, translating that experience into coaching requires additional skills, including tactical preparation, player development, communication and decision-making.
His coaching journey in Zimbabwe offers him an opportunity to develop those abilities while contributing to football in his home country. Working in the second division also provides valuable experience as he learns how to manage players and build a competitive team.
While two Coach of the Month awards are an encouraging achievement, consistency will be crucial as Katsande pursues his ambitions. His immediate challenge will be to build on his promising debut season and demonstrate that he can sustain his progress in professional coaching.
For now, the former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder has every reason to be encouraged by his first steps into management.
