Former Moroka Swallows and Black Leopards striker Joseph Mhlongo has begun a new chapter in his football career after being appointed assistant coach at North-West ABC Motsepe League side Army Rocket FC.
The 36-year-old joins head coach Themba Masango’s technical team following his retirement from professional football in 2025. His appointment marks a transition from playing to coaching, giving him an opportunity to share his experience and knowledge with the next generation of footballers.
Army Rocket FC confirmed the development, stating that Mhlongo will work alongside Masango to strengthen the team’s technical preparation and improve its overall performance.
Mhlongo spent more than a decade playing football, representing clubs such as Moroka Swallows and Black Leopards. His experience in South African football could prove valuable as Army Rocket FC look to improve their performances and compete strongly in the ABC Motsepe League.
As a former striker, Mhlongo understands the demands of playing at senior level, including the importance of discipline, consistency, teamwork and taking scoring opportunities. These are qualities he could help develop among the players as he settles into his new role.
His knowledge of attacking football may also benefit the club’s forwards, particularly in areas such as movement, positioning and decision-making in front of goal. However, his impact will depend on how effectively he adapts to coaching and works with Masango to implement the team’s plans.
Moving into coaching is a significant step for former professional footballers. While playing experience can provide a strong foundation, success in the technical area also requires tactical understanding, communication and the ability to motivate players.
For Army Rocket FC, Mhlongo’s appointment represents an opportunity to add experience to the technical team as the club continues its campaign in the North-West ABC Motsepe League.
Supporters will now be eager to see how the former Moroka Swallows and Black Leopards striker influences the team’s performances. If he successfully transfers his playing knowledge to the players, his arrival could become an important addition to the club’s technical setup.
Mhlongo may have retired from playing football, but his journey in the game is far from over. His new role at Army Rocket FC offers him the chance to build a coaching career while helping the club pursue its ambitions.
