Rangers defender Olwethu Makhanya has revealed that former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Bongani Zungu was one of his footballing idols while growing up in South Africa.
The 22-year-old Bafana Bafana international joined Scottish giants Rangers from Major League Soccer side Philadelphia Union ahead of the current season. The move marked an important step in his career as he continues to develop his game and compete at a higher level in European football.
Makhanya has made an encouraging start to life at Rangers, featuring in 12 matches across all competitions and starting every one of them. His regular appearances have helped him establish himself as a reliable option in the heart of the defence, while giving him valuable experience at one of Scotland’s biggest clubs.
The South African defender has also spoken about what it means to represent Rangers, explaining that playing for a club of their size was something he dreamed about while growing up. His move to Scotland has given him the opportunity to compete at a level he always wanted to reach.
For Makhanya, the experience is even more special because he followed players such as Zungu during his younger years. The former Sundowns midfielder is among the footballers who inspired him, and he also has a connection with Rangers after previously representing the Scottish club.
Speaking to the Rangers website, Makhanya explained how much the opportunity means to him, particularly as a player who began his football journey in South Africa.
“To be part of this club is a dream come true. I have always wanted to play at this level, especially coming from South Africa,” Makhanya said.
The defender then spoke about his admiration for Zungu and the feeling of joining a club where one of his childhood idols had also played.
“When I was young, I used to look up to Bongani Zungu, who happens to have played for the club, so being here for me is unreal and a real blessing,” he added.
Zungu built his reputation through his performances in South African football, particularly during his time at Mamelodi Sundowns. He also gained experience abroad, including his spell at Rangers, before returning to South Africa.
Like Zungu, Makhanya can also play as a defensive midfielder, although he has mainly been used in defence since joining Rangers. His ability to operate in different positions could be useful as he continues to adapt to his new environment.
The young defender will now be hoping to maintain his strong start and continue earning regular opportunities. His performances in Scotland will be important for his development and could also help him strengthen his position in the Bafana Bafana setup.
For South African football supporters, Makhanya’s progress at Rangers offers another opportunity to follow a local talent making his mark abroad. With 12 appearances already behind him, he will be looking to build on that foundation and continue improving throughout the season.
