Rulani Mokwena continued his impressive run with Egyptian side Pyramids FC after guiding the team to a convincing 4-1 victory over El-Gaish in the Egyptian Premier League.
The result extended Pyramids' winning streak to 11 consecutive matches across all competitions, while their seventh straight league victory strengthened their position at the top of the standings.
Mokwena's team returned to domestic action after securing an away victory over South Sudanese opponents El Merriekh in the CAF Champions League, carrying their positive momentum into the league encounter.
Pyramids made an energetic start, with Mohanad Lasheen opening the scoring just six minutes into the match. The midfielder's strike was his second goal of the season and took his total goal contributions to four.
The hosts doubled their advantage in the 15th minute when Mostafa Ziko found the back of the net, putting Pyramids in a strong position early in the contest.
However, El-Gaish responded in the 35th minute through Ahmed Tarek, who reduced the deficit to 2-1 and gave the visitors renewed hope of getting back into the game.
Pyramids continued pushing for another goal after the break, with Youssef Obama appearing to have extended their lead. However, an extended Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review resulted in his effort being ruled out.
Despite that setback, Mokwena's men eventually secured a comfortable victory in the closing stages. Mahmoud Saber scored their third goal with 10 minutes remaining in regulation time, registering his second goal in four days.
Mahmoud Zalaka then converted a penalty in the 89th minute to complete the scoring and seal the 4-1 win for the Egyptian club.
The victory reportedly moved Pyramids five points clear of their closest challengers at the top of the league table, although second-placed Al Ahly still have a game in hand.
Mokwena will now shift his attention to Saturday evening's return fixture against El Merriekh as Pyramids continue their pursuit of progress in the CAF Champions League.
Meanwhile, reports have linked the South African coach with a possible move to Spanish club Valencia CF, where he is reportedly being considered for an assistant coaching position.
The circulating reports claim the proposed role could come with a monthly salary of R7 million and suggest that Mokwena has agreed to personal terms, with final documentation allegedly still being discussed.
However, neither the reported Valencia appointment nor the claimed salary has been officially confirmed. For now, Mokwena's immediate focus remains on maintaining Pyramids' impressive form and preparing his team for its upcoming continental assignment.
