Aden McCarthy Finally Reveals Why He Walked Away From Kaizer Chiefs

Aden McCarthy, a former defender for the Kaizer Chiefs, has spoken out about his decision to depart Naturena for a career in Europe, detailing the reasons he believes a transfer overseas would help him grow as a player. After a stellar debut season with Amakhosi, the 22-year-old central defender signed with Sabah FK of Azerbaijan in June 2026. Many Chiefs fans were surprised by his departure because they had hoped he would become a regular on the first team after spending so much time developing in the academy. On the other hand, McCarthy thought that by relocating to Europe, he could test himself, broaden his horizons, and hone his skills by competing against different types of opponents.

The defender believed that, in order to achieve his goals in the long run, it was best to continue his career outside of South Africa. When a transfer to FC Sheriff Tiraspol of Moldova fell through, he was disappointed because he wanted to play in Europe. After that setback, McCarthy kept working toward his goal of playing for a European club and in June, both clubs officially confirmed McCarthy's transfer to Sabah FK.The opportunity for another academy graduate to take a significant step forward in his professional career was also welcomed by Kaizer Chiefs Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Jr., who expressed pride in the defender's progress.Among McCarthy's many memorable experiences since moving to Azerbaijan is his participation in Sabah's historic run in the UEFA Champions League.

Even though his team lost 2-1 to German powerhouses Borussia Dortmund, one of the high points of his initial stint was scoring the club's first goal. The young defender got some great experience playing against some of Europe's most renowned footballers at Old Trafford, where Sabah played Manchester United. In South Africa, people have taken note of his growth and performances abroad. It has been reported that McCarthy has been included in the preliminary squad for the November 2026 fixtures against Kenya by Bafana Bafana head coach Pitso Mosimane, which could lead to an international opportunity.

McCarthy's story exemplifies the benefits of seeking professional development in an unfamiliar environment. His early experiences in European football indicate that joining Sabah FK could be a significant move in defining his future career, although his departure was disappointing for some Kaizer Chiefs supporters.
