Ouaddou Faces Big Selection Test as Orlando Pirates Prepare for Sekhukhune Showdown
Orlando Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou faces an important decision as the Buccaneers prepare to take on Sekhukhune United in the Carling Knockout Cup quarter-finals at the Amstel Arena on Saturday afternoon.
The Soweto giants will enter the encounter hoping to maintain their impressive record against Babina Noko and take another important step towards lifting silverware this season.
Pirates have enjoyed a positive period under Ouaddou, with the Moroccan tactician gradually establishing a team capable of competing on multiple fronts. Their recent performances have also strengthened expectations among supporters, who will be hoping the team can carry its momentum into the knockout competition.
However, cup football presents a different challenge, particularly against an opponent determined to upset one of the country's biggest clubs.
Sekhukhune United will be eager to make home advantage count and secure a place in the semi-finals. Babina Noko have shown that they can be difficult opponents, and they will understand that eliminating Pirates would represent a major achievement.
The Buccaneers have already defeated Sekhukhune three times this season. Those victories came in the two-legged MTN8 semi-final and a Betway Premiership encounter. Pirates scored six goals across the three matches without conceding, giving them a psychological advantage heading into Saturday's meeting. Orlando Pirates FC +1
Ouaddou, however, is not taking anything for granted. The Pirates coach has warned his players against complacency, describing Sekhukhune as a dangerous opponent, particularly after suffering several defeats against his team.
He also believes there are still areas where his side needs improvement, especially when it comes to controlling matches consistently.
One interesting selection question will be whether Ouaddou decides to maintain the combination that has delivered positive results in recent weeks or make changes to manage his players' workload.
The coach has already explained the importance of managing Oswin Appollis carefully, insisting that the talented attacker is human and needs sufficient recovery time after a demanding period of football.
Meanwhile, Sekhukhune will arrive with a different approach under Papi Zothwane, who replaced Cedric Kaze following the previous defeats.
Zothwane has made it clear that his team cannot afford to approach the encounter in the same manner as their previous meetings. He wants his players to be confident, disciplined and brave enough to take the game to Pirates.
The Sekhukhune coach has also emphasised that his team must forget the previous results and concentrate on the opportunity to reach the semi-finals. EWN +1
For Pirates, the objective is straightforward: protect their Carling Knockout title and keep their ambitions of winning multiple trophies alive. Captain Nkosinathi Sibisi has already made it clear that the Buccaneers are targeting success in every competition they are involved in this season. SuperSport
With kick-off scheduled for 15:00, all eyes will be on Ouaddou's team selection and whether the defending champions can extend their dominance over Babina Noko.
Will Ouaddou stick with his winning formula, or will Sekhukhune finally find a way to stop the Buccaneers?
