Pirates legend says players like Padime must be protected

Orlando Pirates legend Thapelo Liau has called for more protection of creative young players such as Mpho Padime. He believes talented footballers who can do special things with the ball should be encouraged, not forced to play in a simple way all the time.

Liau made the comments amid the ongoing debate about showboating at the Buccaneers. Some people, including the current coach, have criticised players for trying too many tricks instead of focusing on goals and solid defending. Padime, a 19-year-old midfielder, has been at the centre of the talk because of his natural flair and dribbling style.

Speaking out, Liau explained his view clearly. “Okay, some players must play simple because they can’t do miracles with the ball, but once you find a player who can do miracles with the ball, you must encourage him,” he said. He added that South African football needs players who can take on opponents and unlock tight defences. Not every player can do this, he noted, so those who can should be given the freedom to express themselves.

The former player warned that gifted youngsters are often destroyed early if coaches and critics keep telling them to stop being creative. He pointed to history and said players with special skills must be looked after so they can grow and help the team. Padime joined the senior squad this season after strong performances in the reserve team. He has already shown flashes of his ability, though he has not played many matches yet.

The discussion has divided opinions in local football. Coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has said he wants efficiency above everything else and does not like unnecessary tricks when the game is still open. He has made it clear that showboating for its own sake will not be accepted if the team wants to compete in big matches. Supporters and former players remain split, with some enjoying the entertainment and others wanting more end product.

Liau’s message comes as Pirates sit near the top of the league table. The club continues to balance youth development with the need for results. Whether the coaching staff will give more room to players like Padime remains to be seen, but the legend’s words have added weight to calls for protecting natural talent in the PSL. Many fans now hope the debate will lead to a better balance between flair and discipline at the club.
