Baba Mthethwa has criticised Kaizer Chiefs over their continued struggle to win silverware, questioning whether the club’s performances reflect its reputation as one of South Africa’s biggest football teams.
His remarks followed Amakhosi’s 1-0 defeat to Zambia’s Red Arrows in the first leg of their CAF Confederation Cup tie, leaving the Soweto giants needing a stronger performance in the return match.
Mthethwa expressed concern about what he views as a decline in the team’s winning mentality, arguing that supporters have endured prolonged disappointment despite the club’s popularity and rich history.
“Have they [Chiefs] forgotten that in the 26-letter alphabet, there is a W, and the W stands for winning?” he asked.
He said the defeat had added to the frustration of Chiefs supporters across Africa and beyond, many of whom continue to expect the club to compete for major honours.
Mthethwa also highlighted an apparent confrontation between two Chiefs players during the match, describing it as a worrying sign of possible internal difficulties within the team.
Despite his criticism, he acknowledged the club’s strong brand, historical significance and multigenerational fan base.
“Kaizer Chiefs is a giant. Kaizer Chiefs is well supported,” he said, adding that supporters of different generations were increasingly frustrated by the lack of trophies.
His comments have renewed debate about the gap between Chiefs’ stature and their recent results, with fans continuing to call for improved performances and greater consistency.
