Doctor Khumalo Explains What His New SAFA Role Means

Bafana Bafana legend Doctor Khumalo has discussed his recent appointment at the South African Football Association (SAFA), emphasising that his new position is an opportunity to contribute to the growth of football rather than pursue personal recognition.

Khumalo was named deputy chairperson of SAFA's technical committee following a meeting of the organisation's National Executive Committee over the weekend. The former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder was a key member of the Bafana Bafana squad that won the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations, earning recognition as one of South Africa's most celebrated footballers.

During an appearance on #MSWOn947 on Monday, Khumalo revealed that he was still waiting for a clearer understanding of his responsibilities. He explained that he had yet to meet the technical committee chairperson, Jack Maluleke, to discuss the priorities and expectations attached to the position.

Because those discussions have not taken place, Khumalo indicated that it would be premature to outline specific plans for his tenure. Nevertheless, he identified football development and coaching education as areas that could receive attention.

The former international believes SAFA must strengthen its efforts to improve football across the country, particularly by expanding access to coaching education. Such initiatives could help develop coaches, improve standards and create opportunities for players at different levels of the game.

Khumalo also made it clear that the appointment should not be regarded as a personal accomplishment. Instead, he believes the technical committee must work collectively to address challenges and introduce programmes that benefit South African football.

He further expressed support for the inclusion of more former professional footballers in influential administrative positions. According to him, ex-players possess practical knowledge and experience that could help guide important decisions about the sport's future.

Having competed at the highest level, former players understand the demands of professional football and the importance of effective coaching. Khumalo believes their experience could be valuable in shaping policies and development programmes.

The Bafana Bafana great also acknowledged the influence of experienced figures who contributed to his leadership development, including former Kaizer Chiefs chairman Dr Kaizer Motaung.
