Former Kaizer Chiefs player Junior Khanye has launched a strong criticism of the club’s sports director, Kaizer Motaung Junior, questioning whether he has the experience, humility and leadership qualities needed to restore Amakhosi to their former glory.
Khanye, who played for the Soweto giants during Motaung Junior’s playing days at the club, expressed his disappointment with the way the sports director has handled certain decisions. He particularly questioned Motaung Junior’s comments about midfielder Andile Jali, arguing that his public admission that he wanted the experienced player earlier reflected poorly on his judgement.
Khanye also compared Motaung Junior’s leadership approach with that of his brother, Bobby Motaung, who previously served as the club’s general manager.
According to Khanye, Bobby was more accessible to senior players and made an effort to listen to their concerns. He described him as someone who remained involved with the squad and maintained direct communication with the players.
The former Chiefs winger also questioned some of the club’s squad decisions, particularly the reported decision to release Thabo Cele while retaining Sibongiseni Mthethwa. Khanye believes such choices raise questions about whether players are being assessed fairly on merit and their contributions to the team.
Another issue troubling Khanye is what he perceives as a lack of direct engagement between Chiefs officials and their supporters. He pointed to Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates as examples of clubs whose officials have been seen interacting with fans after matches and responding to their concerns.
In his view, that level of accessibility helps strengthen the relationship between a club and its supporters, something he believes Kaizer Chiefs should prioritise.
Khanye’s remarks come amid continued pressure on Amakhosi to deliver consistent performances and compete for major trophies. His criticism has once again raised questions about the club’s leadership, recruitment decisions and relationship with its supporters.
Whether the Chiefs hierarchy will respond to these concerns remains to be seen, as fans continue to hope for a return to the success that once defined the Soweto giants.
