Siwelele FC caretaker coach Godfrey Mosoetsa has explained why striker Zakhele Lepasa has been given limited playing time since returning to the team, saying the club is carefully managing his recovery as they look to improve their performances in the 2026/27 season.
Lepasa has endured a difficult period since joining the Bloemfontein-based club, with injuries affecting his progress and preventing him from securing a regular place in the starting line-up.
The 29-year-old recently returned to the matchday squad for Siwelele's 3-2 Betway Premiership defeat against Marumo Gallants. The match marked his first appearance of the current campaign, although he only featured briefly as a substitute.
His limited involvement raised questions about his fitness and whether he remains part of Mosoetsa's plans.
However, the caretaker coach has clarified that the decision to restrict Lepasa's minutes is not a sign of a lack of confidence in the striker. Instead, the technical team wants to ensure that he fully recovers after spending an extended period on the sidelines.
Mosoetsa explained that the FIFA international break gave Lepasa valuable time to work on his fitness and rebuild the physical condition needed to compete at the highest level.
He also revealed that the club did not want to rush the forward back into action, choosing instead to assess his readiness before including him in the squad.
The coach praised Lepasa's attitude, describing him as an intelligent footballer who is humble, professional and prepared to push himself.
Mosoetsa believes the striker's experience and personal qualities could prove important as Siwelele attempt to overcome their current difficulties.
He further stressed that every player was given a fresh opportunity when he took charge, with selection based on performances in training and behaviour both on and off the pitch.
Lepasa's return to full fitness could provide Siwelele with an important attacking option. His previous experience at Orlando Pirates and contributions to South African football could make him valuable to the team as the season progresses.
Siwelele now face an important challenge, with their Carling Knockout quarter-final against Kaizer Chiefs on Sunday presenting an opportunity to regain confidence.
For now, Mosoetsa has made it clear that Lepasa remains part of the club's plans, but the striker's recovery will not be rushed.
If he manages to stay fit and rediscover his scoring form, Lepasa could play an important role in Siwelele's attempt to revive their season.
