Sekhukhune United have strengthened their technical department with the appointment of former Zimbabwe international goalkeeper Tapuwa Kapini as the club’s new goalkeeper coach.
Kapini joins the Limpopo-based side with considerable experience from both his playing and coaching career. His arrival is expected to provide additional expertise to Sekhukhune’s goalkeeping department as the club continues its Betway Premiership campaign and seeks consistency during the season.
The former Zimbabwe international previously worked with Highlands Park, where he was involved in coaching and developing young goalkeepers. His experience in nurturing players is expected to be particularly valuable to Sekhukhune as they look to improve the performances and development of their goalkeeping options.
Kapini also has a strong connection with Sekhukhune, having represented the club during his playing days when the team was competing in the GladAfrica Championship. He was part of the club’s journey before Sekhukhune established itself in South Africa’s top flight.
At international level, Kapini enjoyed an impressive career with Zimbabwe, making 43 appearances for the Warriors between 2001 and 2013. His exposure to international football, combined with his experience in South Africa, gives him a wealth of knowledge to pass on to the club’s current goalkeepers.
Kapini will work alongside the technical team led by Papi Zothwane, who is overseeing the side following changes to the club’s coaching structure. His immediate task will be to work with Sekhukhune’s goalkeepers and help improve their individual performances, positioning, decision-making and overall consistency.
The club currently has Melusi Buthelezi, Toaster Nsabata and Manual Sapunga among its goalkeeping options, giving Kapini a competitive group to work with.
The new coach was already on the bench when Sekhukhune secured a 2-1 victory over Marumo Gallants at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday. Bethuel Muzeu scored a dramatic late winner to secure three important points.
Kapini’s appointment therefore comes at an important stage of the campaign, with Sekhukhune hoping his experience will strengthen their defensive foundations and contribute to their ambitions in the Betway Premiership.
