Kaizer Chiefs Stars Rally Behind Aden McCarthy After Historic Champions League Victory With Sabah FK

Kaizer Chiefs players have shown their support for former defender Aden McCarthy following his historic UEFA Champions League triumph with Azerbaijani club Sabah FK, demonstrating that the young footballer still enjoys strong relationships with his former teammates at Naturena.

The 22-year-old defender was part of the Sabah FK squad that defeated Slavia Prague 2-0 on Wednesday, 14 October 2026. The victory marked the club's first-ever win in the Champions League league phase, giving the team a memorable moment after a difficult start to its European campaign.

Sabah had previously suffered a disappointing 4-0 defeat against Manchester United in their opening fixture. However, the team bounced back against Slavia Prague, producing a much-improved performance to secure three important points.

Following the historic result, McCarthy shared a post on social media, attracting reactions from several of his former Kaizer Chiefs teammates. Their messages highlighted the connection he maintained with the players despite leaving South African football to continue his career abroad.

McCarthy joined Sabah FK in June 2026 after an impressive spell with Amakhosi, where he established himself as an important member of the first-team squad.

During his time with the Soweto giants, the defender made 33 appearances across all competitions and scored twice. He also contributed to the club's third-place finish in the Betway Premiership during the campaign.

That achievement helped Kaizer Chiefs secure qualification for the CAF Confederation Cup, providing the club with an opportunity to return to continental competition.

His subsequent move to Azerbaijan represented an important step in his development, offering him the chance to experience a different football environment and compete against established European teams.

McCarthy made his Champions League debut against Manchester United at Old Trafford, although Sabah were unable to prevent a heavy defeat in that encounter.

The victory over Slavia Prague, however, provided a welcome response and gave the former Chiefs defender an opportunity to celebrate a significant milestone with his new club.

The result could also provide McCarthy and his teammates with renewed confidence as they continue their European campaign and look to build on their improved performance.

Meanwhile, the reactions from his former Kaizer Chiefs teammates have highlighted the friendships and connections that footballers often develop while playing together.

Although McCarthy has moved on from Naturena, the support he has received suggests that his departure has not ended the relationships he built during his time at the club.

As Sabah FK continue their Champions League journey, McCarthy will be hoping to use this memorable victory as a foundation for further progress and establish himself as a dependable member of the Azerbaijani side.

For Kaizer Chiefs supporters, his achievement also provides an opportunity to follow the progress of a former Amakhosi player making his mark on the European football stage.
