Fresh developments have emerged in the ongoing legal dispute between Mamelodi Sundowns and Brazilian forward Lucas Ribeiro Costa, with reports claiming that FIFA has ruled against the player following the controversial termination of his contract with the South African champions.
The dispute dates back to August 2025, when Ribeiro reportedly terminated his contract with Sundowns unilaterally, maintaining that he had valid legal grounds to end his agreement with the club. Sundowns challenged the decision and took the matter to FIFA’s Football Tribunal, which handles contractual disputes involving clubs and players across international football.
Recent reports have alleged that FIFA found Ribeiro in breach of his contractual obligations and ordered him to pay Sundowns approximately $4 million, equivalent to about R66 million. If confirmed, the reported compensation would represent a significant financial ruling involving a player from the South African Premier Soccer League.
There has also been speculation that Ribeiro could face sporting sanctions, potentially including a suspension from playing football, should he fail to comply with the final ruling. However, the exact details and current status of the case remain unclear.
Sundowns previously indicated that they had not received formal written confirmation from FIFA regarding the reported financial penalty. This has created uncertainty over whether the reported figures and possible sanctions represent a final decision or remain part of ongoing legal proceedings.
Ribeiro’s representatives have also reportedly addressed the latest claims, bringing renewed attention to the dispute. However, details of their response and the precise contents of any FIFA ruling still require official confirmation.
Ribeiro joined Sundowns in 2023 and became an influential figure in the club’s attack. His performances during the 2024/25 season earned him significant recognition before his unexpected departure.
The dispute remains unresolved publicly as both sides await definitive documentation, highlighting the contractual and financial complexities that can arise when high-profile football agreements are terminated prematurely.
