Cardoso’s Radical Revenge: Sundowns Boss Drops 10 Superstars After CAF Disaster

Sundowns Bounce Back From CAF Heartbreak as Six Talking Points Emerge Against Gallants

Mamelodi Sundowns returned to winning ways on Tuesday night, securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Marumo Gallants at Loftus Versfeld Stadium to book their place in the Carling Knockout quarter-finals.

The Brazilians entered the encounter under pressure following their disappointing CAF Champions League exit against Angola's Wiliete SC last weekend. However, Miguel Cardoso's men responded with a determined performance to keep their domestic trophy ambitions alive.

Siyanda Ndlovu proved to be the difference-maker, scoring in the 20th minute to secure qualification for the Tshwane giants. Although Sundowns struggled to extend their advantage, they defended their narrow lead to reach the last eight.

Cardoso made several changes to his starting line-up following the continental disappointment, with Malibongwe Khoza the only player retained from the team that faced Wiliete SC. Ricardo Goss returned in goal, while Mothobi Mvala captained the side. Thabo Cele also made his first start for Sundowns, as the coach looked to give several players an opportunity to impress.

Ndlovu emerged as one of the biggest talking points after delivering the decisive moment of the match. His goal in the 20th minute provided the breakthrough in a contest where clear-cut opportunities were difficult to convert. The winger's contribution earned him the Man of the Match award, further highlighting his growing importance to the squad.

Despite taking the lead, Sundowns failed to establish a comfortable advantage. Their inability to score a second goal kept Gallants in contention and created unnecessary tension during the closing stages. The performance highlighted an area Cardoso will want to address as the club continues its pursuit of domestic silverware.

Marumo Gallants also had moments of promise, with midfielder Moremi Seketso asking questions of the Sundowns defence alongside Ndabayithethwa Ndlondlo and Thato Pheeha. However, Seketso's substitution in the 67th minute reduced some of the visitors' attacking threat as they struggled to find an equaliser.

Mvala played an important role in helping Sundowns secure a clean sheet. His leadership and defensive contribution proved valuable in a match where the hosts needed to protect their slender advantage.

Another notable development was the return of Monnapule Saleng, who made his first appearance of the season after replacing Antonio van Wyk with seven minutes remaining. Although he had limited time to influence proceedings, his return provides Cardoso with another attacking option for the challenges ahead.

The victory offers Sundowns an opportunity to rebuild confidence after their continental disappointment. With a quarter-final place secured, the Brazilians will now look to maintain their momentum and continue their pursuit of domestic silverware.
