Steve Komphela and Manqoba Mngqithi Linked to Shock Sundowns Return as Cardoso’s Future Comes Under Scrutiny
Mamelodi Sundowns could be facing a major technical-team shake-up following their disappointing CAF Champions League exit, with Steve Komphela and Manqoba Mngqithi reportedly emerging as potential interim co-coaches should the club decide to make changes.
According to a report circulating from RushSportsNews on Wednesday, 28 October 2026, Sundowns management held discussions about the future of head coach Miguel Cardoso after the Brazilians failed to qualify for the Champions League group stages. The report claims that Komphela and Mngqithi were considered as possible temporary replacements, although the outcome of the alleged discussions has not been independently confirmed.
The report further alleges that the decision to allow Cardoso to remain in charge for the time being was communicated to CAF president Patrice Motsepe. However, Sundowns have not officially announced any coaching changes, and there is no confirmed indication that Cardoso has been dismissed or suspended.
The speculation comes after Sundowns suffered a painful elimination from the continental competition at the hands of Angolan side Wiliete SC. Following a goalless draw in the first leg, the South African champions played to a 1-1 draw at Loftus Versfeld, allowing Wiliete to advance on the away-goals rule.
The result represented a significant setback for Sundowns, who entered the competition hoping to defend the continental title they won the previous season.
Komphela is familiar with the club's technical structures, having previously worked with the Sundowns coaching staff. Mngqithi also has considerable experience at Chloorkop, having spent several years with the club before departing in December 2024. His recent separation from Tanzanian giants Young Africans has further fuelled speculation about a possible return.
Despite the rumours, neither coach has been officially appointed to an interim position.
Cardoso now faces pressure to help Sundowns recover from their continental disappointment and maintain their competitiveness in domestic competitions, particularly the Betway Premiership. Whether management continues backing him or eventually considers alternatives remains to be seen.
