Real Sociedad Women End Barcelona Women's 45-Game Unbeaten Run

Barcelona suffered their first defeat in 350 days on Sunday, losing 2-1 to Real Sociedad after the Basque side came from behind in a Liga F match at Zubieta.

Patri Guijarro gave Barcelona an early lead, scoring inside the opening minute. Real Sociedad responded through Cecilia Marcos before Ainhoa Marin completed the comeback, handing the hosts a memorable victory.

The result ended Barcelona’s 45-game unbeaten run and marked their first loss since a 1-0 defeat to Real Sociedad last November. It was also Barcelona’s first defeat of the current campaign.

Barcelona had entered the match with a formidable record. They lost only once last season while winning the Champions League, Liga F, Copa de la Reina and Spanish Super Cup. Sunday’s result therefore brought an end to a run built across domestic and European competitions.

Guijarro’s early goal appeared to put Barcelona on course to extend that streak. But Real Sociedad recovered from the setback, equalising through Marcos before Marin’s goal secured all three points for the home side.

For Real Sociedad, the victory was especially significant given the quality of the opposition and Barcelona’s long unbeaten run. The win also repeated the outcome of their previous meeting, when they handed Barcelona their last defeat in November.

Barcelona’s loss does not change the achievements of their previous season, but it ends a remarkable period without defeat.

The result will also serve as an early test for the team as it continues its campaign after collecting silverware across four competitions last season.

The match at Zubieta concluded with Real Sociedad celebrating a comeback win, while Barcelona were left to reflect on their first setback in 350 days.

The visitors had taken the lead almost immediately, but the hosts’ response turned the contest around and brought the Catalan side’s unbeaten sequence to a close.

The 2-1 scoreline means Barcelona’s first defeat of the season came against the same opponents who last beat them.

Real Sociedad’s goals from Marcos and Marin overturned Guijarro’s opener and ensured the home side claimed the Liga F points on Sunday.

Barcelona will now look to respond as the campaign continues, while Real Sociedad can take confidence from ending one of the most impressive unbeaten runs in women’s football.
