Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Willard Katsande has opened up on what the club must do to return to winning trophies. The Zimbabwe international, who is fondly known as Salt and Pepper during his time at Amakhosi, says the team needs consistency if they want to compete with the top sides again.

Chiefs are currently sitting fifth in the Betway Premiership after eight rounds of the new season. They have 14 points and trail leaders Mamelodi Sundowns by nine points. Last season the club finished in the top three, but early results this term have been mixed.

Katsande believes the players must deliver every week if they hope to challenge the big clubs. “For me I just feel like they just need to have consistency,” he said. “When you want to compete with the big boys and you want to be part and parcel of that top three we were last season, we need to be consistent.”

He added that competence in every match is non-negotiable. “Each and every game we need to be competent.” The former midfielder pointed to the culture that has always defined Kaizer Chiefs. Even on a bad day, the team must still find a way to win. “You just need to win, no matter you are having a bad day at the office but you need to win.”

Katsande reminded the current squad that they play for one of the best-supported clubs in the country. Everything is provided for them, and the only thing expected in return is performance on the field. “You are playing for the best institution, whereby everything is provided. The only thing you need is to repay the team by performance.”

He stressed that fans fall in love with Chiefs when the team is winning trophies. Without silverware, the support is harder to keep. He urged the players to raise their standards and give the club the kind of performances it deserves. “Pull up their socks and give performances the best institution deserves.”

Katsande’s message is clear. Consistency, hard work in every game, and a winning mentality are the only ways for Kaizer Chiefs to get back to the top of South African football.
