“I Went to Sundowns to Milk Them for Money” – Mame Niang Reveals Why He Missed Pirates Move

Former Mamelodi Sundowns striker Mame Niang has revealed that money played a major role in his decision to join the Tshwane giants despite having the opportunity to sign for Orlando Pirates during his playing career.

Niang made the surprising admission while reflecting on how he eventually ended up at Sundowns, explaining that he had initially wanted to play for Pirates before the Brazilians presented a more attractive financial offer.

The former striker also revealed that Kaizer Chiefs were among the clubs linked with him, but his career ultimately took him to Chloorkop, where financial considerations influenced his decision.

“I wanted to play for Orlando Pirates, but I went to Sundowns to milk them for money,” Niang said.

His comments have shed light on the negotiations that shaped his move, particularly given the fierce rivalry between Sundowns and Pirates in South African football.

Niang explained that former Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane played a role in the process. According to the former forward, Mosimane approached him after learning that Pirates had contacted him about a possible move to the Soweto-based club.

Niang confirmed that Pirates had shown interest in signing him, after which Sundowns reportedly asked him about the offer he had received from their rivals. The Tshwane club subsequently improved the financial terms, convincing him to choose Chloorkop instead.

The former striker also indicated that regular playing time was not his biggest concern when making the decision. Having already featured in numerous matches throughout his career, he was more focused on securing a financially rewarding contract.

His revelation is likely to spark debate among supporters, especially Pirates fans who may wonder what could have happened had he joined their club.

While footballers are often expected to prioritise their preferred teams, trophies and playing opportunities, Niang's admission highlights the important role that financial incentives can play in professional football.

Ultimately, his decision demonstrates how negotiations and competing offers can change the course of a player's career, even when personal preferences initially point in another direction.
