Naturena Heartbreak: Chiefs Ladies Miss Promotion Despite Stunning Winning Run
Kaizer Chiefs Ladies have suffered a disappointing end to their inaugural campaign after missing out on a place in the promotion playoffs, despite securing a 1-0 victory over the University of Johannesburg (UJ) Ladies on Saturday.
The Amakhosazana needed a win and favourable results elsewhere to keep their promotion hopes alive. Although they fulfilled their responsibility at the Kaizer Chiefs Village, their efforts were not enough to secure the crucial second position in the SAFA Women’s Provincial League standings.
According to reports, Wits University Ladies secured the promotion playoff place after defeating JVW Ladies 2-0 at Sturrock Park. The result ensured that Wits finished ahead of Chiefs in the final standings, ending the Amakhosazana’s hopes of progressing towards the Hollywoodbets Super League.
Chiefs nevertheless finished their maiden campaign on a positive note, thanks to Refilwe Maseko’s decisive goal against fourth-placed UJ Ladies.
The victory provided another reminder of the progress made by the team throughout the season. Their strong finish extended an impressive unbeaten run to 16 matches, during which they recorded 15 victories.
Despite that remarkable sequence of results, Chiefs could not overcome the points gap separating them from Wits. The Johannesburg side finished second behind Mamelodi Sundowns’ reserve team, which topped the standings but was ineligible for promotion because the club’s senior side already competes in the Hollywoodbets Super League.
Sundowns completed their campaign with a 4-0 victory over Mito Stars Ladies, finishing on 73 points. Wits ended with 72 points, while Chiefs collected 70 points to finish third.
For Amakhosazana, the outcome will undoubtedly be frustrating after such a promising first season. However, their performances have offered encouraging signs for the future of the women's team.
Winning 15 matches during a 16-game unbeaten run demonstrates the competitiveness and consistency the squad developed as the campaign progressed. Their ability to finish strongly also provides a foundation on which the club can build.
Missing out on promotion means Chiefs must reassess their next steps and continue strengthening the squad ahead of another campaign. The experience gained during their debut season could prove valuable as they pursue their long-term ambition of reaching the highest level of South African women's football.
For now, the disappointment of missing the playoffs will remain, but the Amakhosazana have given their supporters plenty of reasons to believe in the project.
Their promotion dream has been delayed, not necessarily ended, and the challenge now is to turn this season's progress into an even stronger campaign next time.
