South African footballers competing abroad enjoyed a productive weekend, with Rowan Human and Luther Singh scoring goals, while Yusuf Maart and Kgaogelo Chauke contributed assists for their respective clubs.
The performances offered another reminder of the growing presence of South African talent in international football, with players making important contributions across several European leagues and competitions.
Human was among the players who found the net, although his goal could not prevent Albanian side Partizani from suffering a 4-1 league defeat against Vora. The midfielder scored his team’s only goal in a difficult outing, providing a personal highlight despite the disappointing result.
In Cyprus, Bafana Bafana forward Luther Singh continued his impressive form for AEL Limassol. He opened the scoring in the 2-0 victory over Omonia Aradippou, finding the net in the 61st minute. Chinedu Geoffrey added the second goal shortly afterwards, helping AEL secure all three points. Singh was substituted late in the match after making an important contribution.
Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Yusuf Maart also made his presence felt in Austria. Playing for SV Ried, Maart provided an assist as his side recorded a 3-2 league victory over Austria Wien. Fellow South African Jaedin Rhodes also featured for Ried, playing 66 minutes before being substituted.
Meanwhile, Kgaogelo Chauke registered an assist for Burton Albion in England’s League One. His contribution helped Burton score their opening goal in a 2-2 draw against Peterborough United. Chauke played the full match as his team secured a point.
Elsewhere, Relebohile Mofokeng featured for Belgian side Royale Union Saint-Gilloise, coming on for the final 25 minutes of their 3-0 Belgian Cup victory over Nijlen. Luke Le Roux also completed the full match for Cercle Brugge, who defeated Hasselt 2-1 in the same competition.
In Scotland, defender Olwethu Makhanya played the full match for Rangers in their 2-2 draw against Dundee FC, continuing to build his experience abroad. In the United States, Mbekezeli Mbokazi completed 90 minutes for Chicago Fire, while Puso Dithejane made a second-half appearance in their 1-0 defeat to New England Revolution.
The weekend’s performances provide encouraging signs for South African football, with players contributing goals, assists and valuable minutes across different competitions. Continued consistency at club level could also strengthen their cases for future Bafana Bafana selection.
