Former Chiefs Defender Impresses Again as Sabah FK Remain Unbeaten in Europe

Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Aden McCarthy delivered another strong performance abroad, playing a key role in helping Sabah FK earn a valuable goalless draw against domestic rivals Qarabağ FK in the Misli Premier League. The 22-year-old South African defender played the entire 90 minutes, anchoring a resolute backline that successfully preserved the team's unbeaten start to the domestic campaign.

The hard-fought point keeps Sabah firmly at the summit of the league standings after eight matches. With six victories and two draws, they currently hold 20 points, maintaining a slender two-point lead over both second-placed Neftçi and third-placed Qarabağ. McCarthy’s consistent inclusion in the starting lineup highlights his growing importance to the club as he continues to adapt to the demands of European football.

His steady league form follows an extraordinary midweek milestone on the international stage. Just days prior to the domestic fixture, McCarthy scored his first goal for Sabah during a high-profile UEFA Champions League encounter against German giants Borussia Dortmund. Although the Azerbaijani club suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat, the defender's goal stood out as a major personal accomplishment. Reaching the league phase of Europe’s premier club competition represents a historic milestone for Sabah, who navigated four challenging qualifying rounds to earn their place among the continent's elite.

McCarthy’s rapid rise in Europe has not gone unnoticed back home. His impressive displays at both domestic and international levels earned him a spot in head coach Pitso Mosimane’s preliminary Bafana Bafana squad for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifying double-header against Kenya. While making the provisional list marks a significant career step, the young defender will aim to secure a final spot in the squad to cement his place in the national team setup.

For now, McCarthy remains focused on maintaining his momentum with Sabah as they prepare for a away trip to face Turan Tovuz on Friday, October 30. With regular playing time, a historic European goal, and growing international recognition, the former Kaizer Chiefs academy graduate is enjoying a bright start to his career in Azerbaijan.
